George M. Cohan (1878 - 1942) was a composer, lyricist, playwright, dancer, actor, musical and movie producer who composed the lyrics and melody for what became a patriotic American anthem during World War I, and again during World War II, Over There. It was published on June 1, 1917.

Cohan's other patriotic and popular hits included, The Yankee Doodle Boy, You're a Grand Old Flag, and Give My Regards to Broadway. Cohan was a talented entertainer and businessman who could do it all: write, compose music, sing, act, produce, to the delight of Americans who needed a rallying cry; he was their voice. His songs have endured many generations, still sung by school children, remembered by grandparents and veterans. Cohan was one of the founding members of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
